TopScreen ED - Ultra Bio-Wax barrier coatings

TopScreen ED and TopScreen ED Ultra are solid bio-wax based barrier coatings, consisting of up to 100% renewable substance, which meet direct food contact regulations.

Create your sustainable paper and board packaging solutions with bio-wax based TopScreen ED - Ultra performance barrier coatings, derived from up to 100% sustainably produced vegetable oils.

The global urge for industry and consumers to adopt environmental friendly packaging solutions, produced of renewable source, creates major opportunities for paper and board packaging producers to substitute mineral oil based paraffin and plastic packaging materials. TopScreen ED - Ultra gives the paper and board packaging an adaptable functional barrier performance to preserve food stuff.  The treated paper and board is further fully recyclable, biodegradable and compostable. The compostability has been certified by Vinçotte (www.okcompost.be) according the European norm EN 13432, both for "OK-Compost" and "OK Compost Home".

TopScreen ED - Ultra can be applied on existing wax coaters at temperatures between 80°C and 160°C depending on the used grade. TopScreen ED - Ultra is available in a variety of grades, adapted to specific requirements for paper and board packaging resulting in water repellency, fat resistance, adapted water vapor transmission rate, high gloss, heat sealability, release properties and viscosity modification for machine runnability.

Fields of applications are e.g. candy twist and  fast food wraps, bread bags, meat and cheese wraps, corrugated board for fruit, vegetables and frozen fish.

Customer case study:

Compy® is compostable, recyclable and PEFC

Think a special type of paper, cornstarch glue, a layer of TopChims' TopScreen ED biodegradable coating/wax layer and the right water-soluble ink. These features make Compy an environmentally friendly packaging that is fully broken down on your compost heap.

There is no problem putting your Compy packaging out with other paper waste. Instead of an ordinary bread bag with a standard paraffin coating made of petroleum, Compy opted for a biodegradable layer of TopScreen ED coating of TopChim that does not interfere with the recycling process.

Compy bears the PEFC label. This label guarantees that Compy uses sustainably managed paper for its packaging.

Free of MOSH & MOAH concerns !!!

Among end-users, there is great concern about mineral oils present in, or migrating through, food packaging. Commonly referred to as MOSH & MOAH (mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons & mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons), these substances are known or at least suspected to cause health risks if ingested.

MOSH can be easily absorbed by the human body and can be stored in several organs or in body fat. This leads to accumulation and may ultimately cause damage to the human body. According to the EFSA, the MOSH fraction with chain length in the range of C16-C35 is most prone to accumulation in the human body and should be avoided whenever possible. Analyses have shown that 90-100% of the molecules in a typical commercial paraffin wax falls within this C16-C35 range.

As all TopScreen ED and Ultra types are based on vegetable oils, they eliminate any concerns about MOSH and MOAH substances originating from the wax applied on your food packaging paper.
