TopCorr is a finished barrier coating formulation, used in the production of corrugated board destined for corrugated board packaging with specific hydrophobicity requirements, using very little coating weight.
Fruit and vegetables change several times from conditioned storage and transport to ambient environment when moving from harvesting to final consumption. In these conditions the corrugated packaging often gets moist from condensation and requires a good water repellency to keep its strength.
TopCorr is a water based dispersion which contains a biopolymer based on vegetable oils and meets direct food contact regulations. This coating technology is developed to replace hard to recycle wax emulsion or solid wax in corrugated board packaging.
Corrugated board coated with TopCorr is as easily repulpable as non-treated paper or board. By its very nature this biopolymer has no negative impact on the recyclability, repulpability or biodegradability of the packaging.
TopCorr barrier coating solutions can be adapted to meet additional specific customer requirements, like adjustments for machinability, glueability, coefficient of friction and tackiness.
TopCorr requires no stabilizers even with a high solid content, while viscosity remains low. Coating machines using TopCorr can simply be rinsed with water.
Customer case study:
Coverliner - at one with nature
The Coverliner, developed by Klingele Papierwerke, is a water-, oil- and fat-resistant paper with a TopChim barrier coating. It is based on recycled paper and vegetable oil, and is recyclable and completely biodegradable. With its lotus-effect water-repellent properties inspired by nature, the Coverliner is ideal for the production of packaging for fruit and vegetables, frozen and refrigerated foods, baked goods, animal fodder, greasy/oily spare parts, and much more. It also offers effective protection for the packaged product against condensation, which is formed as a result of varying temperature conditions during transport. Thanks to the special barrier coating, food packaging remains sturdy and undamaged all the way to its destination.
The exceptional properties
The advantages compared to PE and kraftliners
Since the Coverliner is made of recycled paper and vegetable oil, it is an environmentally-friendly, more economical alternative to the kraftliner, which is produced using virgin pulp. The less ecological, watertight PE liner is too large and unnecessary for many products. In addition to price, the main advantages offered by the Coverliner or packaging with the Coverliner are its natural barrier coating, which provides excellent natural protection against splashed water and condensation and its completely biodegradability.
