To respond to the rapidly growing demand for TopChims’ coating solution for recyclable cups, TopChim will hire more polymer chemists.

To address the issues of hard to recycle PE-laminated paper drinking cups, the R&D team of TopChim has focused its research efforts in the past years to develop a coating solution as an alternative for the use of PE-laminates. The successful research efforts have resulted in a set of coatings that are used already today for the industrial upscaling of PE-free paper drinking cups production, and this as well for cold drink as for hot drink cups. TopChim will hire new polymer chemists on a short term to reinforce its R&D team, in order to address the need for further product development of these type of sustainable coating solutions for paper drinking cups.
Globally, eating and drinking on-the-go is a key trend that will increasingly create opportunities for the food and drink packaging industry over the coming years. The paper cup market for cold and hot beverages specifically is growing 3 to 4% worldwide annually. Traditionally these cups are made of paper with high quality virgin fiber, laminated with PE to ensure full resistance to penetration of the beverage into the paper. The plastic layer is attached so tightly that those cups need special facilities to separate the linings from the paper, with almost all recycling plants rejecting the cups and sending them straight to landfill or to incineration plants.
TopChim developed a coating system that tackles two major inconveniences in the life cycle of the paper cup. The coating system replaces entirely the PE lining and is applied during the production process of the paper, eliminating a production step during the production of the cup stock. Most importantly though the coated cup is entirely recyclable, giving the paper of the cup a second life as a raw material for a next paper or paper board production.
The sustainable coating solution, developed by the TopChim R&D staff, has now been applied on an upscaled industrial process for the production of cup stock and for the resulting PE-free, easily recyclable cups. During 2018 this new concept will be widely introduced. This accelerated development in the market introduction process is the right opportunity for TopChim to hire new polymer chemists to address the need for further barrier coating product development.
